The parent
also expressed how she doesn’t see a problem with her children reading comics
over a story book as she believed that as long as they’re reading and
understanding the text, that’s the most important part. Also, she felt if you
force a genre upon a child, it will ruin a learners love of reading.
Both myself and the parent I interviewed felt that the use of
popular culture in schools is a positive development as long as all children
can access whatever is being offered. Therefore, this is something I would like
to experiment with through my practice. Having
discussed these findings with my peers I realise how I need to research
some of the apps available for children with additional needs and explore how I
could use these on my next teaching practice. In the seminar session we also considered how a child's exposure to other genres could actually widen their understanding of different text styles and may support their literacy
work.

I found it interesting what the parent said about the use of comics and how it does not matter that her child isn't reading books, as long as they are reading. I completely agree with this and I feel that if you allow a child to engage in a reading style that they enjoy then they are able to gain a more positive outcome from it, as well as enjoyment.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with your need to research apps available for children with additional needs, because this is something I had not considered and I feel that at present my knowledge of apps for teaching is not wide enough.
I was surprised myself about the parents opinions and it made me think about these texts with renewed perspective. It also made me wonder whether this exploration of genres should then be applied within whole class story time where instead of reading novels or picture books we could read comics and magazine articles, what do you think?
ReplyDeleteI have looked into the apps I discussed in my post and it has led me to this website. I have found some free and useful apps which could really assist children's learning. Here is the link:
